Name: Edward Grayson
Date of Birth: April 2, 1920
Date of Incident: between 1940-1950
Dear Journal,
My name is Edward Grayson, and I am an African American veteran of World War II. Today is December 26, 1945. I served my country twenty two months stationed all over Europe. I fortunately returned safely to my wife, Anita, and our three kids, Kate, Marcus, and Little Eddie. Next week I plan on moving my family from our current location of Tuscalusa, Alabama, to up north. Many of my family members have already made the move, and Anita’s as well (Americans 591). A lot of my previous neighbors and friends relocated to the Sun Belt area and California. I plan to move to Detroit, Michigan, to benefit my family and my children’s future (Urban 1). I have many reasons for my decision on this move. The south still believes in segregation and my family still experiences discrimination. As a veteran of this country, I do not believe we have to still tolerate such ignorance. In Detroit, I wish to take advantage of the growth of industrialization and get a job in this field of work. My older brother, Peter, has a house up there in the suburbs in which he has offered to arrange a split ownership. He did mention there were many whites in the neighborhood, but I have heard there is less discrimination in the North. I believe this move is for the better, and many family members have mine have written to me with nothing but good word. It is getting late, I will write when I find the time in between packing and travel (Migration 1).
Until then,
Edward
